What’s Autism, Mummy?

This beautiful video on autism was created by the Amazing Autism Project. It could be a great educational tool to help parents and teachers stimulate conversation around the topic of autism with their own children and/or class.

Autism is a lifelong, developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people, and how they experience the world around them. It is a lot more common than people think with approximately 1 in 100 (1%) of people in the UK diagnosed with the condition. In many ways, autistic people are just like you and me – we all eat, sleep and breathe, we all have different our likes and dislikes, ups and downs, and we all experience the world in a different way. For autistic people, the way they experience the world can be quite different from you and me. Things that you and I may find easy (e.g. talking to others or taking a walk in the park) can be much more difficult and stressful for autistic people. In the same way, when you or I are scared or nervous we may bite our nails, look at the ground, or clench our fists, but autistic people may find different ways to comfort themselves such as watching the wheels on a toy car spin, or flapping their hands, or even sometimes banging their head. These differences do not mean that autistic people are broken in any way it simply means that they can see and experience things differently to you and I.  Watch and share the video below to raise awareness and education around the topic of autism.  You can find many more facts and resources on the topic of autism here.
