A detailed written report is provided, outlining assessment results, strengths and challenges, and recommendations for educational and HSE services.
Common Questions About Adaptive Functioning Assessment
What is adaptive functioning?
Adaptive functioning refers to an individual’s ability to manage everyday life tasks and responsibilities, including:
- Conceptual Skills – Communication, literacy, time management, and problem-solving.
- Social Skills – Social awareness, interpersonal relationships, and ability to follow social rules.
- Practical Skills – Personal care, safety awareness, money management, and independent living skills.
How long does an adaptive functioning assessment take?
The assessment session with the individual typically takes about 1 to 2 hours. However, there are also questionnaires and rating scales that must be completed by parents, school staff, and the individual (when age appropriate) to provide a full picture of adaptive skills.
What types of tests are used in an adaptive functioning assessment?
The specific tests used depend on the individual’s age and the reason for referral. Typically, the assessment includes:
- Cognitive Testing – A measure of intellectual ability using tests such as:
- WISC-IV (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Fourth Edition)
- WAIS-IV (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale – Fourth Edition)
- WJ-IV Cognitive (Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities – Fourth Edition)
- Adaptive Functioning Measures – Used to assess daily life skills and independence, such as:
- ABAS-3 (Adaptive Behavior Assessment System – Third Edition)
- Vineland-3 (Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales – Third Edition)
These assessments help determine whether additional supports are required and assist in decision-making regarding educational placements, life skills training, and long-term planning.
