Developmental Assessment

Developmental Assessment

Evaluating Early Childhood Development

A developmental assessment is a structured evaluation of a child’s early development across five key areas:

  • Adaptive Functioning – Daily living skills, independence, and practical coping abilities.
  • Social and Emotional Development – Social engagement, emotional regulation, and interactions with others.
  • Speech and Language Development – Early communication skills, language comprehension, and expressive abilities.
  • Motor Development – Fine and gross motor skills, coordination, and physical milestones.
  • Cognitive Development – Problem-solving, early learning skills, and developmental reasoning.

The primary purpose of this assessment is to identify children with developmental delays and provide clear recommendations for early intervention planning to support their future development.

What to Expect from a Developmental Assessment

Our Developmental Assessment process is designed to be thorough, clear, and supportive for both the individual and their family:

    Pre-Assessment Information Gathering

    •  Parental Background Information – A developmental history covering pregnancy, birth, and early milestones.
    • Review of Existing Reports – Including medical, speech and language, or occupational therapy reports if available.
    • Liaison with Preschool (if appropriate) – Gathering information on the child’s social interactions and early learning.

    Assessment Session

    Post-Assessment

    • Parental Feedback Appointment – Feedback is provided in person, via Zoom, or phone call to discuss findings and next steps.
    • Comprehensive Report – A detailed report outlining the child’s strengths and challenges, with recommendations for interventions, therapies, or referrals to specialist services if required.

    Common Questions About Developmental Assessment

How long does a developmental assessment take?

The assessment session with the child typically takes about 1 to 2 hours. Additionally, parents will be asked to complete questionnaires and rating scales to provide a fuller picture of the child’s development.

What types of tests are used in a developmental assessment?

The specific tests used in a developmental assessment depend on the child’s age and areas of concern. The assessment typically includes one of the following standardised tools:

    • Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development (Bayley-4) – Assesses cognitive, language, motor, and adaptive functioning in infants and toddlers.
    • Battelle Developmental Inventory (BDI-3) – Evaluates early developmental skills across the same domains, including cognitive ability, communication, motor skills, and adaptive functioning.

Both assessments provide a comprehensive picture of a child’s early development, helping to identify potential delays and guiding intervention planning.

How can this assessment help my child?

    A developmental assessment can:

    • Identify early developmental delays and areas needing additional support.
    • Provide recommendations for speech therapy, occupational therapy, or early intervention services.
    • Support applications for preschool supports, educational accommodations, or HSE-funded services.
    • Offer guidance on how to support developmental progress at home and in early learning settings.

Where does the assessment take place?

Assessments are conducted at our Harold’s Cross, Dublin 6W office. If required, additional liaison with preschool staff can be arranged.

When will I receive the report?

We aim to provide a comprehensive written report within approximately 3 weeks of receiving all necessary information and completed parental forms.
